Safeway Grocers

Located in Surprise, AZ, this 63,290-square-foot Safeway serves as an anchor of the Sterling Grove Shopping Center. Completed in November 2023, the grocery store features a modern design with a prominent glass curtain wall entrance, structural canopies, and a pharmacy drive-thru. The store also offers a full-service Starbucks, fresh produce and meat departments, and convenient grocery pickup and delivery services.

Alliance Steel partnered with Campbell Construction, Image Building Systems, and RKAA Architects to provide the structural framing and metal building components for the project. Our scope included custom pre-engineered frames, steel roof decking, structural canopies, and 24-gauge ALOK-16 and 7.2 panels. The building features a low-slope TPO roof supported by engineered steel framing, with structural connections designed to integrate the steel roof system with concrete masonry (CMU) shear walls.

The project required extensive coordination to accommodate the building’s mechanical systems and architectural features. Our team engineered framing for 40 rooftop openings measuring 5′ × 6′, structural support for 18 rooftop equipment loads, and additional roof capacity to accommodate a future solar panel load of 10 PSF. Custom hollow structural section (HSS) columns, jack beams, and curtain wall supports were also incorporated to accommodate the building’s distinctive entrance and canopy structures.

These specialized structural solutions allowed Alliance to meet the project’s architectural and operational requirements while supporting the construction of a modern grocery facility serving the growing Surprise community.
